Verdi’s Attila at the Mariinsky Theater

This Mariinsky Theater production of Verdi's opera imagines Attila the Hun's attempt to capture Rome. A brave Italian woman, Obadella, swears to avenge her father's death by killing Attila with his own sword, which parallels one theory of how the historical Attila died, though it's still a mystery. The show appealed to Italian nationalism and was popular when it premiered in 1846.
