JanArtsNYC: PROTOTYPE: Opera/Theater/Now

PROTOTYPE, an annual festival of opera-theater and music-theater works by pioneering artists from New York City and around the world, returns for its seventh season, co-produced by Beth Morrison Projects and HERE. The pioneering festival features eleven presentations that, characteristically, “shift the whole paradigm of what opera is and can be” (New York Observer). Occurring throughout New York City at HERE and partner presenting venues, the 2019 season spotlights the imaginative and dramatic work of 32 lead artists, exploring ideas of mental health, ethnicity and motherhood, as well as concerns around the public justice system and immigration. With five world premieres, one New York premiere, one U.S. premiere, two works-in-progress, one tribute concert and their site-specific free public series, Out of Bounds, this year’s festival, is one you won’t want to miss.
