Actress Charity Angél Dawson invited ALL ARTS host Garen Scribner behind the scenes of the hit musical “Waitress” in the latest episode of “Broadway Sandwich,” where she dished on everything from the production’s infamous pies to how she finds time to unwind during two-show days.
“The hardest part of being in showbiz for me would have to be the schedule,” the actress, who plays the boisterous and confident waitress Becky in the musical, revealed. “You miss out on a lot of life and have to be very intentional in not losing track of your people and other things that are important to you.”
Despite the hectic pace, she “wouldn’t trade the job for anything,” she cautioned. After playing Becky on stage more than 500 times, the role and the show have become a formative part of her career as a performer. And while “Waitress” may be ending its Broadway run in 2020, Dawson said her memories of cooking competitions and inside jokes with the cast and crew will stand the test of time.
“In 30 years, I will look back on my time in ‘Waitress’ with joy and gratitude,” she said. “I’ve learned so much and grown so much through my time that I’m a better person and artist because of it.”
She continued: “We really rally to take care of one another.”
