Ellyn Marsh is no stranger to the stage and has earned a reputation for turning her own personal turmoil into performance art. Over the summer, the former “Kinky Boots,” “Priscilla Queen of the Desert” and “Pretty Woman” cast member allowed Broadway Sandwich cameras to follow her for the day, offering up insight into how she transforms her personal ups-and-downs into career highs.

In her solo show “I’m Sorry… What,” which received rave reviews during a limited engagement at Joe’s Pub, the actress channeled her pain from an emotionally abusive relationship into a humorous and poignant one-woman show about discovering inner-strength. Being so open about a relationship gone (horribly) wrong — and the dizzying toll it took on her self-esteem — was a risk, but one she said she was willing to take if it could positively influence other women.

“I think that me sharing my story made a lot of other women not feel alone,” she said of her show. “We accept physical abuse or domestic abuse, but the mind being manipulated is sort of an embarrassing thing to admit.”

And while her most recent gig as an ensemble cast member in “Pretty Woman” may have ended with the show on Aug. 18, Marsh has a lot of new projects in the works. As she showed Broadway Sandwich host Garen Scribner, she maintains a seemingly endless list of side hustles, from stints as a cabaret performer to working as a vocal coach. It’s enough to make anyone’s head spin, but Marsh says she stays grounded by her love of the industry and a feeling that what she’s doing is worthwhile — and perhaps even inspirational.

“My brain’s always going,” the actress explained. “I’ve always kind of been a do-er, I guess.”
